Homoeopathy

Origin of Homeopathy

Homoeopathy is world 2nd largest preffered method of treatment. It was discovered by Dr. Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician, in the late 18th century, based on the principle "Similia Similibus Curentur" (let likes be treated by likes).

Therapeutic Approach

It employs remedies that produce similar symptoms in healthy individuals to treat illnesses, focusing on holistic and individualized patient care.

Preparation of Remedies

Homeopathic medicines are derived from natural substances (animal, plant, mineral) through a process called dynamization or potentization, enhancing their curative power while ensuring safety and non-toxicity.

Principle of Cure

Homeopathy stimulates the body's natural defence mechanisms to promote healing, considering symptoms as the body's reaction to illness.

Homeopathy in India
Historical Context: Introduced around two centuries ago, homeopathy is a vital part of India’s pluralistic healthcare system. Its roots strengthened in 1839 when Dr. John Martin Honigberger treated Maharaja Ranjit Singh.

Government Support

The Government of India has actively promoted homeopathy through infrastructure development, establishing 195 undergraduate and 43 postgraduate colleges, and supporting research and regulatory frameworks.

AYUSH Integration

Homeopathy is part of the AYUSH system (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy), included in healthcare delivery at various levels and co-located in numerous health centers.

Widespread Use

Homeopathy is recognized in over 80 countries, with legal status in 42 countries and acknowledged as part of complementary medicine in 28 countries. WHO considers Homeopathy as one of the most commonly used forms of Traditional & Complementary Medicine.

Popularity in Europe

A significant portion of the European population is familiar with homeopathy, with many using it for their health needs. It is notably popular among children as a complementary therapy.

Homeopathy, with its rich history and robust framework in India and globally, continues to gain Conclusion acceptance and recognition, offering effective alternatives for chronic ailments while prioritizing holistic and individualized patient care.

Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, born in Meissen, Germany, is recognized as the founder of homeopathy. He graduated with an M.D. in 1779. After a brief medical practice, he became disappointed  with traditional mode of treatments (Painful procedures, suppressive methods

etc. ) and returned to translation. His journey into homeopathy started in 1790 while translating William Cullen's Materia Medica(Cullen was a renowned physician of that time), leading him to self-experiment with cinchona bark. This sparked a lifelong dedication to homeopathic  principles i.e- Likes cure likes. Symptoms producing agents in crude have capabilities to cure alike symptoms when administrated in potentized form or minute dose. In 1796, he published "Essay on a New Principle," followed by his seminal work, "Organon of the Rational Art of Healing," in 1810. Hahnemann lectured at the University of Leipzig from 1812 to 1821 before relocating to Cöthen, Germany. In 1835, he moved to Paris, where he continued to practice homeopathy until his death in 1843 from bronchitis.

SCIENCE
BEHIND

Homeopathy, established by Samuel Hahnemann in the late 18th century, is known for its use of extremely high dilutions, which has led to controversy regarding its modus operandi.

Detection of Ingredients: IIT Bombay's research is the first in the world to demonstrate the presence of starting ingredients in homeopathic medicines even after ultra-high dilutions.

Following are the key findings :

Encapsulation Discovery: The active ingredients are found to be encapsulated in meso-microporous cross-linked silicate chains, enhancing their stability.

New Preparation Method: A new process has been developed that uses a higher number of succussions with lower dilutions (within Avogadro limits) to ensure the presence of measurable active ingredients.

Concentration Stability: Research showed that the concentration of gold nanoparticles reached a threshold where further dilutions did not reduce their concentration, indicating an asymptote was formed.

Silicate Overcoat Formation: The process allows for a silicate overcoat to be formed on homeopathic medicines, achieved by repeating succussions without excessive dilutions.

Role of Ethanol-Water Solution: The presence of an ethanol-water solution acts as a crosslinking agent for silicon polymerization in sodium silicate, enhancing the structural integrity of the medicine.

Meso-Microporous Structure: The silicate polymer chains create a meso-microporous structure that traps nanobubbles, preventing the active materials from dissolving during further dilutions.

Potential for Controversy Resolution: This innovative preparation method may help dispel existing controversies surrounding the nature and efficacy of homeopathic medicines.
